GAUGE:
17 sts = about 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) over 2 Small Cable and 1 Lace Panel patterns. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle. 2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle. 3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased. sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over) A double decrease worked as follows: 1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle. 2. Knit the next 2 sts together. 3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts. Yo (yarn over) An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows: 1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles. 2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed. 2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle. NOTES:
1. Shawl is worked in one piece beginning and ending with a Garter st (k every row) border. 2. Markers are placed to divide the sts for the various st patterns. 3. The Small Cable pattern, the Lace Panel and the Texture Panel each have a different number of rows. You will need to keep track of which row you are on for each pattern. You might want to use a separate row counter for each st pattern, or set up a sheet of paper with 3 columns (one for each st pattern). If you are comfortable working with spreadsheets, you can use one to track your rows.

SHAWL Cast on 86 sts. Knit 3 rows for Garter st (k every row) border. Set up Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Texture Panel over next 10 sts, place marker (pm), (p1, k4, p1, pm, k9, pm) 4 times, p1, k4, p1, (pm), work Row 1 of Texture Panel over last 10 sts. Note: Slip markers as you come to them on all following rows. Set up Row 2: P10, (k1, p4, k1, p9) 4 times, k1, p4, k1, p10. Begin Patterns Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Texture Panel over next 10 sts, (work Row 1 of Small Cable over next 6 sts, work Row 1 of Lace Panel over next 9 sts) 4 times, work Row 1 of Small Cable over next 6 sts, work Row 1 of Texture Panel over last 10 sts. Row 2 (WS): Work Row 2 of Texture Panel over next 10 sts, (work Row 2 of Small Cable over next 6 sts, work Row 2 of Lace Panel over next 9 sts) 4 times, work Row 2 of Small Cable over next 6 sts, work Row 2 of Texture Panel over last 10 sts. Continue to work in patterns as established until piece measures about 41 1/2 in. (105.5 cm) from beg. End with a Lace Panel Row 18. Knit 3 rows for Garter st border. Bind off FINISHING Button Loops Lay Shawl lengthwise, with RS facing, to place markers for buttons and button loops. For buttons, place 3 markers along long top edge of Shawl - 8, 12, and 16 in. (20, 30, and 40 cm) from lefthand corner. For button loops, place 3 markers along right hand short end of Shawl - at top righthand corner and then 4 and 8 in. (10 and 20 cm) below corner. At each buttonloop marker, from WS and with a double pointed needle (dpn), pick up and k 2 sts. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * 9 times. Bind off. Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Use yarn tail to sew end of loop to Shawl. Sew buttons to Shawl at button markers. Weave in ends. |
